Some things I have been working on

Some things I have been working on this past week. They are orders from visitors at the fair last week. There were more, but I didn't take a picture of everything. They were pretty much the same items, only in different colors.

I had a lot of fun at the fair by the way! It was a bookfair at a school. I had displayed my tatted work on a small table. And I also sat there tatting. The children and teachers were very interested in what I was doing. And they especially loved how delicate tatted work is! There even was someone who knew what tatting was, because her mother used to do it. I had not expected that here in the DR.

Zij zijn nu helemaal 'into' frivolité! Erg leuk!

This was my table. =) I had also brought some homemade shuttles, in case there would be someone there who wanted to learn how to tat. So far I haven't been able to do any workshops yet, but I have been teaching some of the teachers individually. They are totally into tatting now! I love that!

Dit vlinderarmbandje was vooral erg populair! Die waren binnen no time weggevlogen!
This butterfly bracelet was very popular! They were gone in no time!

And they also really liked this beaded bracelet! The patterns I used were all free, and you can find them here.

Butterfly bracelet

The little purple butterfly, which already was fluttering along in the previous two blog posts, now found her destination! I used it to make a bracelet. =) Two ribbons on each site, attached with some clasps, and done! Very simple, and very cute!

Boekenleggers

Making some quick projects for the fair this week. It's a bookfair, so I thought it would be a good idea to make some bookmarks. I used two different butterfly patterns. I think I'll go with the simple one. =) I used thread size 10.

Beginnerspatroontje

I think many tatters first started with this butterfly pattern. =) It's made out of only rings and picots, and therefor very easy to do! Perfect for my workshop, so I started making some examples. I used Tatted Treasures' pattern (click here and scroll down). I can really recommend Tatted Treasures to beginners! On this blog there are many video tutorials of all the tatting basics!

For this homemade shuttle I searched my house for a cardboard box with a pretty print. (cornflakes on your shuttle is not really what you want, right?) But I couldn't find anything... For a moment I was tempted to cut up the cover of a book, but then decided I might regret that later. ;) At last, I found some pretty and sturdy stationary paper in the back of my closet.

To make sure the print would be in the middle (it was at the border of the paper), I had to make the shuttle a little slimmer. And, since the paper was thinner (I guess about 200 gr/m2) than the cardboard of the cornflakes box, I also made it a little higher. I am really surprised at how sturdy this shuttle is for such 'thin' paper! And actually, I also think this little shuttles works even better! =)

Knoopbloem

I've been working with my new shuttles today! They are working fine! =) I made this little flower around a button. I got this idea at the blog Wanda's Knotty Thoughts, I also used one of her free patterns. (the bottom part of Button-Centered Tatted Snowman). I used a slightly thicker thread (size 10?), because that's what I want to use if I do get to give the workshop. I think it is easier to learn tatting with a thicker thread. =)

Do you also want to make your own shuttles? Check this post to see how to do that. All you need is a piece of cardboard, a ruler, a pencil, scissors and tape! =)

Tutorial: How to make a tatting shuttle

As far as I know no-one tats, here in the Dominican Republic. So they also don't sell tatting shuttles here. I might be giving a tatting workshop soon, and I was looking around on the internet to find tutorials on DIY shuttles. I found some great tutorials (like this one on how to make plastic shuttles by Beads and Handworks), but many of them I couldn't try out because I didn't have the right materials. (sewing machine bobbins, glue)

Actually I really wanted to make a shuttle with material I already have at home. As low budget as possible. =) And I also wanted, like with my own Clover shuttles, that the thread would be on the inside, because I find that easier to work with. I couldn't find anything on the internet, so I sat down this week to design something myself. And after many different prototypes, this is what I came up with! =)

For those of you who also give workshops, or for those of you who would like to try out tatting, but don't want to buy all the materials yet, I made a step by step tutorial, so you can also make your own shuttles!

UPDATE:

Shuttle 1.0
Shuttle 2.0

Thanks to some reviews of my testers, I made another version of my shuttle. I'll call them Shuttle 1.0 en Shuttle 2.0.

Shuttle 1.0 is quicker to make. But if you don't load enough thread on this shuttle it is a bit wobbly. You'll need to really hold it in the centre. Shuttle 2.0 has an extra part, which makes it sturdier. If you want to make Shuttle 1.0 you can skip step 6, 7, 8, 17 en 18 of the tutorial.

Wat heb je nodig:

- Stukje karton 85 x 40 mm (bijvoorbeeld een stevig visitekaartje)
- Liniaal
- Potlood
- Schaar
- Plakband

_______ = kniplijn | cut line
.............. = hulplijn | guide line
_ _ _ _ _ = vouwlijn | fold line

What you need:

- Piece of cardboard 85 x 40 mm (for example a sturdy business card)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Tape'
- (for Shuttle 2.0 you'll need an extra piece of cardboard 25 x 69 mm)

That's it! Sounds good, right? I think almost everyone will have these items at home! =)
Of course you can use any kind of cardboard, instead of a business card. In my example (below) I used a cornflakes box. The thickness of my cardboard is about 0.5 mm.

To start you first have to measure and draw the different parts of the shuttle. It's not that hard. Below, I show you in five steps how to do it. (six, if you want to make Shuttle 2.0) The green lines are the lines that have been added at each step.

(My drawing is in millimeters, if you do not have a ruler with millimeters, you can use this online converter)

STAP 1 | STEP 1
Teken eerst een rechthoek van 85 x 40 mm.
First you draw a 85 x 40 mm rectangle.

STAP 2 | STEP 2

Teken twee kniplijnen.
Draw to cut lines.

STAP 3 | STEP 3

Teken 4 hulplijnen.
Draw 4 guide lines.

STAP 4 | STEP 4

Teken twee vouwlijnen.
Draw two fold lines. On the right line you draw two thick cut lines.

STAP 5 | STEP 5

Draw the cut lines for the points of the shuttles. And your drawing is done!

STAP 6 | STEP 6

This is the extra part you'll need for Shuttle 2.0. Draw this on an extra piece of cardboard. Notice that you are drawing 4 of the fold lines (striped) slightly outside the guide lines (dotted). If you want to make Shuttle 1.0, you can skip step 6, 7, 8, 17 and 18.

STAP 7 | STEP 7

Knip de kniplijnen.
Cut the cut lines.

STAP 8 | STEP 8

Fold the fold lines. (see step 12 for a tip on how you can fold the cardboard easier) You'll fold all the flaps to the back. Note that the 4 horizontal fold lines are a little bit higher than the guide lines. So make sure you don't fold the guide line.

STAP 9 | STEP 9

Knip nu de eerste rechthoek uit.
Now you can cut out the first rectangtle.

STAP 10 | STEP 10

And then cut the rectangle into four pieces. The two pieces on the left side will be the outside of the shuttle. The two pieces on the right side will be used for the inside.

STAP 11 | STEP 11

Cut the corners off the two outside pieces. And fold the points a little bit to the back.
Cut the thick lines into slits. The slits should be as wide as the thickness of the cardboard you're using.

STAP 12 | STEP 12

Now you're going to fold the two inside pieces. Since it is a little hard to fold cardboard, I first pressed a line with my ruler along the fold line.

STAP 13 | STEP 13

Fold the left side to the front and the right side to the back.

STAP 14 | STEP 14

Rotate one of the pieces clockwise, upside down. And slide the two pieces together.

STAP 15 | STEP 15

Now you're going to use the tape. You're going to tape all around your work. (If you are making Shuttle 2.0, set aside a small piece of tape (3-4mm) for use in step 17)
Start with taping tightly over the two top parts. (make sure they are put straight and tight together)

STAP 16 | STEP 16

Tape the tape tightly to the inside. You can use your ruler help you do this. Continue on, taping a whole round around your work. Do not cut the tape yet.

STAP 17 | STEP 17

When you reach the top of your work again, get the extra Shuttle 2.0 part. Fold this part all around your work. Tuck the folded end of the long narrow piece underneath the opposite end, forming your rectangular core. Secure this with the short piece of tape you reserved in step 15. The 4 flaps will go over the top and bottom of your work.

STAP 18 | STEP 18

Now tape all around your work again, to secure the extra part.

STAP 19 | STEP 19

Eentje bovenop...

After this, you're going to tape around your work one more time. This time you tape the outside parts. One goes on the top...

STAP 20 | STEP 20

... en de andere op de onderkant. Nu kun je de plakband afknippen.
... and the other one on the bottom. Now you can cut the tape.

STAP 21 | STEP 21

Make a little cut in the top part of the shuttle. You can use this to secure your thread.

And your shuttle is done! I've been tatting with these shuttles for a bit. And I think they work fine. But I would really like it if you would test them for me. I would like to know if the tutorial was easy to follow. But especially if you find these shuttle easy to work with. I'm looking forward to your comments! =)

Thanks to Muskaan, GraceT, Swissgirl and Tatknot of the Craftree forum, for testing my tutorial! =)
